Ongar RFC Launches Mini Rugby with Summer Taster Courses

Ongar RFC is to launch a mini rugby programme for girls and boys aged 5 – 8 years old that will bring tag rugby to the Ongar area for the first time.

The mini rugby programme will start with two Summer Taster courses on Thursday, July 23 and Thursday, July 30 2009 at Ongar RFC’s Love Lane ground. Then from September 10, 2009 there will training on Sunday mornings between 10am and 11am.

Tag rugby is a non-contact version of rugby that girls and boys can train and play together so the coaching team will include a female coach, Katherine Richardson, to attract and support girls interested in playing this dynamic, fun, team sport.

Ongar RFC President, Peter Blake welcomed the launch of the programme:

“Ongar RFC has long been an important part of the local community so by launching the mini rugby programme we are cementing our community links. We will also be creating the next generation of rugby players.”

The mini rugby programme will also include development of stronger links with six local primary schools to encourage tag rugby. Ongar RFC has made a funding application to SportEssex so that it can provide free coaching to the schools during the Autumn 2009 term.

Philip Cranwell, Ongar RFC mini rugby coordinator, commented:

“The aim of our mini rugby programme is that young girls and boys have fun, learn new skills, get fit and be part of a team. Success for us will be measured by the smiles on the kids’ faces at the end of a session.”

As well as introducing girls and boys to tag rugby the Summer Taster courses will include sessions to develop a name for the mini rugby teams and design the kit around the club colours of Navy Blue and Gold. Parents can find details about how to book a place at the Ongar RFC website www.ongarrugbyclub.co.uk.

The coaching team have all completed the RFU Tag Rugby training course and a number of enthusiastic club members have signed up for a future course. The club has also appointed Philip Cranwell as its Child Welfare Officer to safeguard the well-being of its young members and all coaches will be CRB checked.
